RAVENS TO VISIT VICTORIA FOR “ISLAND PRACTICE”
…Times Colonist to present open practice for National Lacrosse League franchise for Island lacrosse fans Saturday, January 31st, at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre

VANCOUVER (January 28, 2004) – The Vancouver Ravens, British Columbia’s professional lacrosse franchise, will stage their first-ever “Island Practice” Saturday, January 31st, at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre in Greater Victoria.

Presented by The Times Colonist newspaper and supported in part by The Laurel Point Inn and Harbour Air Seaplanes, the “Island Practice” will feature a public presentation, speeches by several of the players, a public autograph session and free admission to a one-hour workout emphasizing stick skills.

The “Island Practice” will get underway at 4 p.m. with a media conference open to the public, followed by autographs and music from 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. The actual workout will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Oak Bay Recreation Centre, which has recently been upgraded to allow for an indoor turf.

The initiative is part of the Ravens’ long-term approach to reach out to fans from throughout British Columbia.

“We’re trying to reach out to Island sports fans in general and Island lacrosse fans in particular,” said Tom Mayenknecht, the Governor of the Vancouver Ravens who has many Victoria connections personally and professionally, inside and outside of lacrosse. “It’s on strategy for us as a franchise for several reasons, including the great base of knowledgeable lacrosse fans who are from Greater Victoria and up Island. It’s particularly meaningful because we also have more than a quarter of our roster of players who are Victoria-based, including team captain Darren Reisig, Chris Prat, Bruce Alexander, goaltender Nick Patterson, practice roster player Tyler Heavenor and assistant coach Rod Banister.”

Mayenknecht also acknowledged the special lacrosse culture in Victoria created by the winning tradition and success of the Western Lacrosse Association’s Victoria Shamrocks, 2003 Mann Cup champions.

“The Shamrocks have built themselves as a WLA powerhouse generation in and generation out and have created a community of great lacrosse fans,” said Mayenknecht. “We’re hoping we can have Shamrocks fans cross over and become NLL fans and be part of the RavenNation.”

The Ravens will also offer Island lacrosse fans the chance to purchase special ticket offers and Ravens team apparel.

“We have five more home games, three of them scheduled as Sunday afternoon matinees,” said Remo Bussoli, Island Ambassador for the Ravens. “The Sunday matinees are great for Island fans because of the terrific bus packages available but games like February 20th against the Toronto Rock are also attractive thanks to some special hotel packages in Vancouver.”

The Sunday matinee games include special offers such as The Old Spaghetti Factory Family Pack for $66.00. The package is valued at $145.50 and includes four Raven Black tickets, two children’s meals at The Old Spaghetti Factory, a Ravens beanie toque and a Ravens trucker style hat courtesy of Brine.

The Times Colonist is presenting the Island Practice in conjunction with a series of reader contests it has planned for Island lacrosse fans. The Times Colonist will be offering a game day suite for lucky readers – Sunday, March 28th, when the Ravens host the Calgary Roughnecks in a 12:30 p.m. matinee at General Motors Place.

The Laurel Point Inn has been designated as the “Official Island Nest for Ravens Lacrosse Fans”. As part of its commitment to the Greater Victoria community, it is joining with the Times Colonist in making the Island Practice possible.

In addition, the Ravens have partnered with Harbour Air Seaplanes to offer special travel packages to Vancouver. Charter Bus Lines is offering $10 connections from Tsawassen to and from General Motors Place. Up Island, HarbourLynx is offering special Ravens ticket packages.
