Shamrocks Start Provincials     (7/30/2009)
PoCo up First on Friday
by Janice Huckin

The Intermediate Shamrocks are in Delta this weekend competing for a Provincial Championship.  The other intermediate 'A' teams are the Port Coquitlam Saints, Coquitlam Adanacs and Delta Islanders.

First up for the Baby Rocks is a Friday encounter with the Saints at 8:00, all games taking place at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

The Rocks swept the season series against the Saints, winning 7-6 in Port Coquitlam on June 14, 11-6 on June 27 and 9-6 on July 11, both at Bear Mountain Arena.  In the league standings the Shamrocks finished tied with Delta with 15 wins and 6 losses while the Saints had a record of 11 wins and 10 losses, good for fourth place.

Despite their place in league standings, PoCo boasts 3 of the top 4 scorers in the regular season.  Keegan Bal led the league with 37 goals and 32 assists for 69 points.  Richard Lachlan was third with 66 points and Jimmy Delaney fourth with 60 points, although he also spends a lot of time in the penalty box, sporting 92 penalty minutes

The Rocks, on the other hand are a little way down the list with respect to scoring.  Brody Eastwood finished the season with 36 points, while Jake Emms was a point behind and Kyle Dexter had 32 points on 17 goals and 15 assists.  Both Shamrock goaltenders finished the season in the top 10 with Cory Mayzes sporting a 5.87 goals against average and 86.33 save pct while Cody Cook had a 7.12 gaa and 82.9 save pct.

Competition will be as hot as the temperatures this weekend.  Check back to this website for updates - we'll do our best to keep you up to date.
