The Intermediate ‘A’ Shamrocks finished off their regular season with their third consecutive victory in less than a week, defeating the visiting South Fraser Stickmen 14-6 at Bear Mountain Arena Sunday.
Jeremy Funk and Cory Mayzes were the starting goaltenders for the visitors and home team respectively. Victoria jumped out to a quick lead, Dylan Lefebvre scoring unassisted at 4:08. The lead was increased to 2 at 8:40 when Jake Emms streaked in and picked up a pass from Lefebvre, that goal coming with the ‘Rocks shorthanded. At 9:48 it was Jason Gregg taking a pass from behind the net and the home team was up 3-0. Cody Cook took over in the Victoria net just prior to the halfway point, Mayzes still favouring a ‘lower body injury’. South Fraser got on the board at 10:32, Ryan Haigh doing the damage with a low shot. Victoria replied at 12:27, Adam Brown scoring from the center slot, a power play marker restoring the 3 goal lead and driving Funk from the net in favour of Keenan Lambright. The Stickmen once again found the range, Brandon Bull putting a shot over top of Cook at 12:57. At 13:04 Connor Chapman scored what was the third goal in 37 seconds as he got a breakaway and once again the hosts were up by 3. Emms scored his second of the game, this one on the power play at 17:08, squeezing a shot inside the post. The visitors managed one more before the period ended when Reegan Comeault fired a hard, low shot to the back of the net at 19:13 sending the teams to the dressing room with Victoria holding a 6-3 lead.
With exactly a minute gone in period 2, Russell Kirk increased the Shamrocks’ lead, taking a pass right in front and beating Lambright. Michael Tebbutt replied for the visitors at 3:28 but another power play goal from the Rocks’ Kurtis Green at 5:21 negated that goal. The next goal didn’t happen until the 13:11 mark, Matt Cruickshank scoring for South Fraser. The Shamrocks then rattled off 4 unanswered goals in a span of 1:14. First it was Emms getting his hat trick at 14:27. Jamie Sorensen followed up with a hard shot top shelf at 14:47 and it was Lambright getting the hook and Funk returning to the Stickmen net. It didn’t matter who was between the pipes to the Baby Rocks as Shea Wakefield took a pass on the crease and made no mistake at 15:35. Six seconds after that, right off the faceoff it was Lefebvre picking up his second of the contest as the score after 40 minutes was the Shamrocks 12, Stickmen 5.
The ‘Rocks scored their thirteenth goal at 2:40, Sorensen getting his second of the game. Adam Wallace followed up taking a beautiful pass and quick stick at 8:22. The game was out of reach but South Fraser did manage one more goal, Jesse Peters scoring on a spinaround shot which may have been screened.
Jake Emms led the Shamrocks with a hat trick and 2 helpers. Jamie Sorensen and Dylan Lefebvre each scored twice and added one assist. Conrad Chapman, Kurtis Green and Adam Brown each scored once and added three helpers while other goals came from Jason Greg, Shea Wakefield, Russell Kirk and Adam Wallace. Brody Eastwood kicked in a pair of assists.
Nobody on South Fraser had much success as 6 different players managed one goal on Mayzes and Cook.
Final standings still need to be determined for playoff match-ups as the regular season doesn’t officially end until Friday but it is expected that the Intermediate Shamrocks will host the first game of a best-of-three series next Saturday, July 18.
