Rocks Leave the Points Behind     (6/30/2009)
by Frank Greenlay

Perhaps the Senior Shamrocks burned up all the Island Karma at the Coquitlam Sports Centre in their win over the Senior Adanacs on Saturday night.  Whatever.  There was certainly no Island Karma in the vicinity when the Babyrocks took to the same floor on Sunday afternoon.  The Intermediate A Adanacs took everything that the Babyrocks served up and took the points to even up the ledger between the clubs.

The Babyrocks struck first, with Blair Pinnock scoring from Kurtis Green and Steven Axford at 7:48.  The Adanacs replied with two quick goals, at 9:06 and 9:56, to take the lead.  That closed the scoring in the first period, although the scorekeeper was busy with several minor penalties called later in the first period.  Disjointed is the word that comes to mind.

The extra-curricular activity continued in the second period, with offsetting minor penalties at 2:07.  The Rocks took advantage of the extra floor space at 2:17, getting their second goal at four aside, when Pinnock scored his second of the game, with Jake Emms and Cory Mayzes credited with the set up.  The game was tied at two.

What followed on the penalty front looked a lot like the second period the night before when the green were tagged with a disproportionate number of penalties, including overlapping calls.  The Babyrocks defended well for much of the time shorthanded, but the A’s managed to score their third goal at 12:29 when up by two men.  The period ended with the A’s leading 3 to 2.

The A’s started the third period with some jump and got two goals, at 4:54 and 6:52.  The second goal seemed to fire up the Rocks, and Jamie Sorensen replied at 7:24 to draw the Rocks within a pair.  The door opened further when the A’s were tagged with a minor, giving Brody Eastwood a chance to snag the ball and score a power play goal unassisted at 9:50.  The lead was down to a single marker.  It was a game again.

The teams played tight until offsetting minors at 13:35 put the teams at four aside, but this time it was the A’s who used the space to score quickly at 13:46 and restore the two-goal A’s lead.   And that was all she wrote.

The final score was 6 to 4 for the A’s.  The shots on goal totals were also close, with the A’s holding a 50 to 41 advantage.

One might question the running series of penalties in the second that drained a lot of energy and kept the Rocks on the PK, rather than working their offense.  But, the Rocks did not look particularly sharp.  Routine passes were missed and poor decisions were made on the floor.  Neutral folks in the arena noted the Rocks missing passes and getting to loose balls second too many times.

Perhaps it was the dearth of Karma after Saturday night, but maybe it was just one of those games.  Next game up is a week away, when the Babyrocks visit Queens Park Arena on July 5th, at 1:30 PM.
