The Intermediate Shamrocks got off to a slow start Saturday but overcame a 3-2 deficit after the first period to hand the Port Coquitlam Saints an 11-6 defeat.
Cody Cook got the nod between the pipes for the home team and it was Garrett Shafer patrolling the crease at the other end.
Victoria actually took the lead when Brody Eastwood scored on a high hard shot at 4:04 but some penalty problems gave the Saints some opportunities they couldn’t turn down as they scored three straight goals, two on power plays. At 6:42 Brett Austin scored the first power play marker and at 11:25 Mike Crondahl added another. The third consecutive goal came at 14:33 off the stick of Matt Delmonico. The ‘Rocks got one of those back at 16:04, Kurtis Green sneaking one inside the post to send the teams to the dressing room with Victoria down by a goal.
The Baby Rocks found the range big time in the middle frame as they outscored the visitors 8-1. It started early with Jake Emms blazing one by Shafer on the power play. Emms added another, unassisted, at 3:27, creeping in and burying one stick side. And he made it a natural hat trick as he took a pass from behind the net at 6:31. At 7:36 Dylan Lefebvre took a shot from a bad angle but it got by Shafer on the stick side and the Irish were up by 3. The Saints managed a lone goal at the 8:25 mark, Garrett Chan scoring unassisted. The ‘Rocks answered that one just 21 seconds later, the fourth of the game for Emms. With his team playing shorthanded, Eastwood picked up his second of the contest at 10:14, coming off the boards and burying one. At 11:43 Ethan Garland netted a goal off a high hard shot late in the 30-second clock and Lefebvre flew through the air and added his second of the game at 18:05. After 40 minutes the home team had a 10-4 lead.
The third period was scoreless until the 8:52 mark when the Saints scored with a 5-on-3 advantage, Jimmy Delaney doing the honours. Blair Pinnock replied for the Rocks at 11:45 and it was PoCo getting the final goal of the contest, off the stick of Cory Cop at the 19:27 mark.
It was the eleventh straight victory for the Shamrocks and a very strong outing for goaltender Cody Cook who kicked out 34 of the 40 shots he faced. Offensively the victors were led by Jake Emms with 4 goals. Brody Eastwood and Dylan Lefebvre each had a pair of goals with singles going to Ethan Garland, Blair Pinnock and Kurtis Green. Russell Kirk kicked in with 3 assists while Shea Wakefield and Raj Allen contributed 2 helpers apiece.
Port Coquitlam got goals from 6 different players.
Tomorrow the Baby Rocks are on the road to face the first place Coquitlam Adanacs who suffered their only loss of the season at the hands of these Shamrocks by a 4-3 score.
Next home game for the Intermediates is two weeks from now when they will play a home doubleheader. Saturday, July 11 these same Port Coquitlam Saints will return and Sunday, July 12 the visitors will be the South Fraser Stickmen. Both games begin at 1:30 pm at Bear Mountain Arena.
The Jr. and Intermediate Shamrocks want to thank the Sr. Shamrocks and all those who came out to the tailgate party Friday prior to the Shamrocks vs Nanaimo WLA game. Each team benefitted to the tune of $682 thanks to your generosity and/or appetite.
