South Fraser Falls to 'Rocks     (6/22/2009)
Winning Streak Continues
by Janice Huckin

The Intermediate ‘A’ Shamrocks traveled to the mainland Sunday and won their second game of the weekend, their tenth in a row, defeating the South Fraser Stickmen 8-5.

Cody Cook got the start in goal for Victoria in a game that saw a slow start by both teams.  Ethan Garland got the ‘Rocks going with a goal 5 minutes in starting a 4-goal run.  Steve Axford made it 2-0 around the 12-minute mark and Jake Emms and Kyle Dexter had the visitors up 4-0 with 1:10 remaining.  Cook made several big saves to keep the home team off the board.

The second period things went a little awry early as the Stickmen fought back and had the game tied up by the halfway mark.  Victoria coaching staff called a time out and the boys in green re-grouped and regained a 2-goal lead before the period ended.  Kurtis Green got an unassisted power play goal and Kyle Dexter followed up with his second of the game, sending the teams to the dressing room with Victoria holding a 6-4 lead after 40 minutes.

There were no goals scored in the first half of period 3.  Adam Wallace put the
Shamrocks up by 3 but that lead evaporated quickly as South Fraser scored a shorthanded at 11:55.  The Stickmen took some undisciplined penalties late in the game including a 5-minute spearing the major.  The Rocks made them pay as Blair Pinnock rounded out the scoring with a power play goal.

Kyle Dexter led the Shamrocks attack with a pair of goals and 2 helpers, Jake Emms had a goal and 2 assists, while Steve Axford and Kurtis Green each had 1 goal and 1 assist.  Other goals came from Ethan Garland, Adam Wallace and Blair Pinnock.  Cody Cook was outstanding between the pipes, kicking out 47 shots and contributing 1 assist.

This was the second win in an emotional weekend where personal tragedy has bonded these athletes closer than they were previously.

Next up for the Baby Rocks is a home game next Saturday, June 27 when the visitors will be the Port Coquitlam Saints.  Can they make it 11 in a row?  Come on out – game time is 1:30 pm.  The game is part of a big Shamrock weekend that includes a tailgate party on Friday prior to the Sr. Shamrocks hosting the Nanaimo Timbermen and 2 Jr. Shamrock home games, on Saturday and Sunday both starting at 5:00 pm.
